Causes Before Birth

- Family history of childhood deafness Consanguineous marriages
- Blood group complications or RH incompatibility
- Infectious diseases or illnesses during pregnancy (e.g., Syphilis, rashes with fever, mumps)
- Very poor physical condition of the expectant mother
- Excessive alcohol or nicotine intake. Intake of antibiotics or any other toxic drugs.
- Exposure to X-rays

Causes During Birth

- Premature or instrumental delivery
- Birth anoxia (Lack of oxygen during delivery)
- Delayed or feeble birth cry
- Birth weight less than 1200grams

Causes After Birth

- Deformities of ear, nose, face and throat
- Jaundice, high fever or convulsions immediately after birth
- Infectious diseases (e.g., mumps, measles, syphilis, brain fever, viral fever, T.B.)
- Intake of antibiotics for a long duration Injury to the ear
- Exposure to loud sounds
- High Blood Pressure, Diabetes
- Aging
- Tumours of the nerve supplying the ear
- Neglected ear discharge

Here are a Few Guidelines For The Prevention Of Hearing Loss

  • Avoid marriages among blood relatives
  • Ensure good health of the expectant mother-seek health check-up at regular intervals.
  • Expectant mother should avoid contact with persons suffering from infectious diseases.
  • Make sure that the delivery takes place under a supervision of a doctor.
  • Immunize the child.
  • Maintain good ear hygiene.
  • Avoid exposure to loud sounds
  • Use ear protectors while working in noisy areas.
  • Avoid taking medicines without doctor’s advice.
  • Avoid injuries to your ears and head.
  • Do not neglect earache or ear discharge, dizziness etc.,
  • Do not try to clean the ears with sharp objects.
  • Do not use oil or any other liquids to clean your ears.

A short and simple test conducted by the Audiologist determines the type and severity of hearing loss. After the age of 50, hearing must be evaluated regularly, at least once in a year. Each individuals hearing loss is unique and needs an equally individualistic solution. Hence, consulting a professional audiologist is essential for proper rehabilitation. Hearing evaluation is recommended to start rehabilitative measures as early as possible and to ensure a BRIGHT future for the individual.
